Freedom of Information Act (FOIA)

The Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), 5 United States Code 552, is a law that allows you the right to access information from the federal government, including the Department of the Navy.  The FOIA is implemented in the Navy through Secretary of the Navy Instruction 5720.42G, Department of the Navy Freedom of Information Act Program.

Navy Reserve FOIA Requester Service Center

This office processes FOIA requests for Commander Navy Reserve Force (CNRF) and subordinate commands, including: Commander, Navy Reserve Forces Command (CNRFC); Commander, Naval Air Force Reserve (CNAFR); Commander, Naval Information Force Reserve (CNIFR); all Navy Reserve Region Readiness and Mobilization Commands (REDCOMs); all Navy Reserve Centers (NRCs) and Reserve Squadrons.

Submitting a FOIA/Privacy Act Request

FOIA requests should be submitted electronically via FOIA Online. Alternatively, requests may be submitted via mail to:

Commander
Navy Reserve Forces Command
1915 Forrestal Drive
ATTN Legal
Norfolk, VA 23511

All FOIA and/or Privacy Act (PA) requests must be in writing and include the following information:

1.  Your name, complete mailing address and telephone number. If you send the request by postal mail, consider including an email address we may use to contact you with any questions we may have about your request.

2.  A statement that you are making a FOIA and/or PA request. In general, make a PA request to ask for records about yourself (Example: "A copy of an investigation in which I was a named subject") and make a FOIA request for records about others. Whichever type of request you make, however, we will consider both the FOIA and the PA in determining how to respond and provide you the most information that we may release to you under either statute.

3.  Describe the specific record(s) you are seeking with enough detail so that a knowledgeable agency official may locate the record(s) with a reasonable amount of effort. Such detail should include descriptive information, timeframe to be searched, full names, and any other pertinent information that may assist in identifying the subject of the request.

4.  A statement that you agree to pay fees associated with the release of the record you are requesting, or a request that we waive fees.

Note: You may limit the amount of money you are willing to pay without further consultation. (Example: "I agree to pay up to $25. If the fees will exceed $25 please provide me an estimate of the fees before processing my request").

FOIA requesters who may have questions concerning the processing of their requests, should contact the CNRF FOIA Office at 757-322-5620 or via CNRF_FOIA@US.Navy.mil.  Please indicate your name, information request, and an email address where you can be reached and representative will contact you shortly.

If you are not satisfied with the response from this center, you may contact the DON FOIA Public Liaison at 202-685-0412 or DONFOIA_PA@Navy.mil.
