He was commissioned an Ensign after completing the Navy Reserve Officer Training Corps curriculum at Texas. Upon completion of Surface Warfare Officer School and Steam Engineering School in Newport, Rhode Island, he reported onboard USS WASP (LHD-1) in Norfolk, Virginia.
