Understanding Your Military Service Obligation (MSO)

• Your MSO is EIGHT years
• MSO is determined by your Date Initially Entered Military Service (DIEMS)
• Applies to EVERY service member
• Grounded in Federal Law (Titile 10, US Code)
• Upon separation from Active Duty, your remaining MSO is served in the Ready Reserve through the IRR or drilling.
• Officers must resign reserve commission AFTER completing their MSO to be separated from IRR.
• Your MSO date is listed in Block 6 on your DD-214 or initial service contract.


 

Officer Resignations & Records (MSO)

• Officer Resignation submission and Officer Records management is managed by PERS-911D.
• Records Management updates include the following:
   - Service Schools
   - Officer Summary Record (OSR)
   - Additional Qualification Designation (AQD)
   - Navy Officer Billet Classification (NOBC)
• Issues Officer Discharge Certificates

Active Duty for Training (ADT) Orders
  • Primary Purpose:
    -Support the Fleet (Active Component)
    -Train in your Career Field
    -Maintain Readiness & Mobilization Skills
 
  • Eligibility:
- Possess the security clearance required for the proposed duty

assignment
- A physical examination within the last 3 years
- Dental Screening within 12 months preceding the start of ADT
- Mobilization potential (rating/skills)
- Bona Fide Training Opportunity

IRR Policy & Responsibilities

 In the IRR you are required to:
• Respond to official correspondence
• Update recall information
• Annual screening
• Maintain uniforms
• 27 points minimum for Officers
• 50 points minimum for a qualifying year for Officers

 In the IRR you may participate in:
• Active Duty for Training Orders
• Funeral Honors Duty
• Courses for Retirement Points

Promotions:
• Enlisted: NOT eligible unless mobilized
• Officers: Automatically considered
 

 

 

Individual Ready Reserve Improved Screening (IRRIS)

 

  • Electronically update your information
  • Annual screening will be sent during your anniversary month
  • You will receive an email with a personal token to login and complete your screening
  • Can be completed via cellphone or computer

 

Correspondence Courses 

• Correspondence Course submission and tracking is managed by PERS-912. Correspondence Courses can be found on the MyNavyHR website.

Funeral Honors Duty (FHD)

• Volunteer at Navy Reserve Center
• May receive FHD Allowance
• 1 point per day
