Jacksonville, Florida –
Meet Fire Controlman Second Class (FC2) David Johns, a dedicated Sailor from Windermere, FL, who has spent the past nine years serving the Navy with unwavering commitment. Recently selected as Sailor of the Quarter, FC2 Johns exemplifies the values of hard work, humility, and professionalism that define a top-tier Sailor. His recognition is just one part of a larger story—one that highlights his critical role in maintaining the Navy’s operational readiness and his passion for supporting his fellow Sailors.
As a Fire Controlman, FC2 Johns plays a vital role in maintaining fire control equipment for Navy vessels. Notably, he recently helped prepare USS St. Louis (LCS-19) for deployment, an accomplishment he considers one of the proudest moments in his career.
For FC2 Johns, joining the Navy was more than a career choice—it was a calling. “It was God’s calling,” he explains when reflecting on his decision to serve. This deep sense of purpose drives him daily, and he finds his motivation in the Sailors around him, particularly those who are willing to teach and share their knowledge.
Receiving the Sailor of the Quarter award is a significant honor, though FC2 Johns remains modest about the recognition. “I’m proud of the work, not the recognition, but it’s great to be appreciated,” he says. His leadership and accomplishments, especially in preparing a Navy vessel for deployment, have left an indelible mark on his unit and shipmates.
Mentorship has been a key part of his journey, and FC2 Johns credits the guidance of key figures in the SurgeMain/SERMC unit in Orlando, FL, for shaping his career. Over the past eight years, mentors such as Chief Machinist Mate Mahoney, Chief Hull Maintenance Technician Wake, Hull Maintenance Technician First Class Petty Officer Carter, Machinist Mate First Class Petty Officer Alomari, and Senior Chief Machinist Mate Pizarro have played pivotal roles in his professional development.
Looking ahead, FC2 Johns plans to continue seizing opportunities and remaining open to new challenges. “You have to look for opportunities and talk to the right people,” he advises, underscoring the importance of initiative in the Navy.
Among the many memorable moments of his service, FC2 Johns recalls his time mobilized to Isa Air Base, Bahrain, where he maintained a fuel farm and refueled P-3 and P-8 aircraft. This deployment, followed by a Weapons Training Program (WTP) in Sembach, Germany, solidified his commitment to service and supporting his fellow Sailors.
As FC2 David Johns moves forward in his Navy career, he embodies the core values that define the Navy: Honor, Courage, and Commitment. His faith and determination continue to fuel his drive to serve, and his unwavering dedication to both his shipmates and the mission ensures he will leave a lasting legacy. In a Navy that demands excellence, FC2 Johns not only meets the standard—he sets it.
